If he wants to clean carpet himself, he should use a mop (yes, a mop) and scrub his carpet with that. I do it monthly because I have a very light carpet + 3 children = a mess. I pretreat the carpet stains with either Shout Out or a stain remover. After that settles, I mop the carpet using elbow grease on the stains (like coffee) and after the floor is finished it looks new.

I've found Rug Doctor brand cleaning supplies to be the best and most economical. Note: Never use products that are not specifically designed for use on carpet. As far as methodology goes, you want to pretreat any stains with an appropriate stain remover. Organic stains require an enzymatic stain remover such as Natures Miracle. After stains are addressed, you pretreat the entire area to be cleaned, either with Natures Miracle, a pretreatment solution, or with Oxy Clean Crystals (make a solution and apply with a spray bottle ). Work the pretreatment into the carpet fibers with a stiff brush. From there you simply use the carpet cleaning machine as per the manufacturer's instructions, though you'll want to use less cleaning solution since you've already got pretreatment on the floor. You may need an anti-foaming agent OR pay close attention to the recovery tank on the machine and empty it before sudsing can be drawn into the motor. Once you've cleaned the carpet with cleaning solution, go back over the whole area with clean hot tap water to rinse. The color of the extraction will tell you if further rinsing is required. Be careful not to over saturate the carpet while cleaning or rinsing, as excess moisture will cause odors and mold/mildew.
