Q:In a house, it looks like an addition, that now is the kitchen , it feels HOT, it doesn't seem to have a very good insulation on the roof at all, the ceiling is already low, so, what can be done on the outside to give it more insulation?, i don't care what it is i just want to give it a GOOD insulation, the roof is flat and to shingles. Any IDEAS? , thanks!: Sorry but there isn't enough info to give a good answer...is there space between the ceiling and the roof to add insulation...there may be enough insulation but no ventilation in the area directly under the roof (atic area) If there is not enough air flow in this area the temperature will skyrocket thus heat the kitchen AND the shingles will deteriorate very quickly.If you still need to add insulation the best way is to put sloped roof (if possible)and add insulation in the space created or you can use foam insulation and re roof ..make sure you seal between the wall system and new insulation and whatever method make sure to allow air to flow under the roof (both inflow and outflow)

Q:Are black concrete roof tiles for my house uncomfortably hot even with roof under sheeting and insulation?: I wouldn't get bogged down by it. It depends on you're area and what you want to use the loft for. But the insulation will keep it ok inside. Just add some air bricks to encourage ventilation. This will keep you're heating bills down, and unless you're going to be living in the loft I really wouldn't worry. There are a lot of variables to consider. Just stick you're logical head on and you'll find your own answer. Just consider what the Canadians say; "Insulate tight and Ventilate right".

Q:Without loft insulation ,the roof space is full of air.Why does this not keep the heat in?: Because air can circulate, (it's called convection) and transfer a lot of heat. In other words, air alone is a very poor insulator. .

Q:Why is the most insulation needed in ceilings or roofs? Just wanted to know: well insulation in general is to keep the inside temperature different than the outside. since hot air usually rises, i think it is to keep warm air form escaping in winter. also you don't usually have a heater in the attic, or air conditioning so insulation will keep the air in the attic from having an effect on the air within the house. that is my idea as to why

Q:were can i buy material to insulate pans and instructions to install it? I have seen many roofs with this done ,but , the lowe,s and home depots don't have .: I think your problem is in the way you are asking the question. I for one do not know what you mean by a metal pan roof. I know all about steel roofs or corrugated roofs and a lot of other roofs but what is a metal pan?

Q:I am really confused about this science stuff! Sustainability is terrible xP: All versions of insulation are largely air that is kept from moving - air is a good insulator if convection - movement of heated or cooled air due to changes of density - is prevented. This assumes that a vapor barrier and caulking prevent actual air movement through the wall when a wind is blowing. Some insulators are also poor conductors of heat so the connection between inside and outside that might occur is broken. As it happens, glass used in fiberglass and minerals used in rock wool are actually pretty good conductors of heat in solid form but as fine particles and flakes they don't conduct well from one strand/piece to the next.
