Q:how reliable are today's aluminum block engines?
The problem with the Vega was not so much that it had an aluminum block, as it was an unsleeved aluminum block, i.e. the pistons ran directly on aluminum bores (actually it was an aluminum/silicon alloy that was injection molded, very advanced technology for the time). Although Mercedes had already done this on some of their cars (with mixed success), it didn't work well in the Vega, the bores would scuff and score, and the engine would burn oil badly, sometimes in only 15,000 miles or so. Rebuilt Vega engines had iron sleeves installed and were very sought after. As long as an engine has iron sleeves in the bores there is no reason it shouldn't last as long as an iron engine. There is actually more to worry about with aluminum cylinder heads, they are generally not as durable as iron ones, though they are almost universal now. The fact is, engine technology has come a long way since the 70's, and most modern engines will reach 200k with good maintenance if they are not abused, aluminum or not.
Q:can i join copper to aluminum?
Yes, in this case. Long ago, house wiring was allowed with aluminum wiring. But, shorts were resulting from dissimilar metals touching, while conducting large current and in the presence of electrolitic moisture. The dissimilar metals touching was a problem due to electrolytic corrosion taking place- any time two dissimilar metals come in contact in the presense of an electrolytic solution, corrosion takes place. However, in your case, you are connecting a ground wire, that does not normally conduct- it will only conduct in case of a short or other failure to ground. You are not installing this in a place where salty, moist air is a concern (the electrolyte)- so, it's okay.

Aluminum is chosen in aerospace because it is light weight. Iron is preferred in structures here on earth because of its strength and suitability to endure gravity for a long period of time.

All of these answers are good. There is a concern. I would suggest that if there is a question of security -- that you slip ( or get an electrician) to slip each switch and outlet out of the wiring box and tighten the connections. As for the racoons, there are simple and pretty much low cost (under 30 bucks, voltage sensors at your local electrical supply, and maybe at Home-Depot. These really nice devices sense the presence of AC electricity in the wall, even locating the actual point where the electricity stops at a break! This is a do-it=yourself project.

Q:How can you identify aluminum?
To start with, are you refering to aluminum as metal, an aluminum compound, or a solution with aluminum present as ions? If it is metaallic aluminum, it won't stick to a magnet, and it will react with HCl, however this isn't sufficient to definately say it is aluminum, it would be better to get a density, melting point, etc.

Since aluminum only has 3 valence electrons it will be missing two electrons from its octet. This means that one of the chloride groups must share an extra electron group with the aluminum. Any three of the chlorides can share an extra electron pair with it (i.e. they'll have 2 lines attached to aluminum), so there is resonance. There are 3 to be specific, one for each chloride sharing another electron pair with Al.
Q:Steel or aluminum alloy rims?
Aluminum rims are a whole lot better on the mechanical stand point, they are lighter, usually stronger (depending on the alloy) and they allow for better heat disapation. Lighter rims will save gas money (nothing you will notice, maybe an extra mile/tank, if that). Depending on the alloy used in the aluminum rims, they are usually stronger and can take more froce abuse, just as long as they don't get scuffed up, ect. With the better heat disapation. When the brakes heat up, the heat is sent out ever direction, mostly through metal. Aluminum (alloy) is a great conductor of heat. So when the brakes heat up, the aluminum rims will absord much of this heat, and the outside air will be able to cool the rim faster then the brakes themselves, but the brakes will stay cooler this way. Brakes that are running cooler, will last longer then brakes running hot. You will have less of a chance of brake fade a condition where the brakes get to a point of being to hot, they don't function at all, or its hard to stop the vehicle. It will also extend the brakes over all life, in some cases up to 40-50%. I had stock steel rims in my truck, small rims for a small truck, and whenever I was doing highway driving, i would get brake fade under high speed braking. When I switched to aluminum rims, I have not had brake fade since, I don't know about the life on the pads, as I switched the rims, before I wore a set down. I picked up a set of 4 5spoke rims from an Explorer and put them on my ranger, I paid $80 for the 4 and they look in pretty good shape, little corrosion. A down side to aluminum rims is corrosion, they corrode easier, and can cuase discolouration of the rim itself, or can cause leaky tires if it corrodes around the bead seat, which it usually does. Its a fair trade off however.
