Aluminium has a protective coating of Aluminium Oxide, this prevents many chemicals reaching the surface. This is because aluminium has a very strong affinity for oxygen and bonds to it with extremely strong bonds. It can be removed by dipping it carefully into a solution of Mercury (II) Chloride.

Q:how would you use aluminum to extract silver from film?
The silver in film is part of a silver salt (silver halides.) It is a very very small amount, probably less than 1 cent worth per roll. You would be a lot better off selling the film than trying to extract the silver from it. If you are hell bent on it, the first step is to expose the film to light. This will break the silver from the halides. Then you can go about trying to figure out how to get the silver apart from the film. I am sure it is possible, but it would involve a lot of work. Q:Does molten aluminum stick to steel?
Unless the surface was specially prepared the aluminum won't bond to the steel. To be sure it doesn't, simply 'smoke ' the steel with a candle etc. (thin layer of carbon black), to ensure no bonding. Your problem will come from the different co-efficients of expansion. The aluminum will shrink more than the steel in cooling and will grab that rod very tightly. Your hole, ( therefore your rod), will have to have a considerable taper if you ever hope to drive that rod out of the casting. Caution- You are aware that most aluminum alloys will burn in air at pouring temperatures aren't you?

It became shiny because aluminium salts are acidic in water and the acidity dissolves the coating to form a copper salt and leaving the shiny copper. CuO + 2H3O+ ---- Cu2+ + 3H2O The reaction to form the acidity, a hydrated hydrogen ion H+(H2O) or H3O+ is fairly complex. If aluminium chloride is dissolved in a large amount of water the solution is acidic, but this has nothing to do with formation of hydrochloric acid. The solution contains hydrated aluminium ions and chloride ions: AlCl3(s) + aq → [Al(H2O)6]3+(aq) + 3Cl -(aq) The hexaqua complex ion behaves exactly like ions of similar type formed from transition metals; the small, highly charged metal ion polarises (withdraws electron density from) the water molecules that are attached to the aluminium ion through dative covalent bonds. This makes the hydrogen atoms d+ and susceptible to attack from solvent water, which is acting as a base. The complex ion is deprotonated, causing the solution to be acidic from the formation of hydroxonium ions H3O+: [Al(H2O)6]3+(aq) + H2O(l) → [Al(H2O)5OH]2+(aq) + H3O+(aq)

your head is probally warped,,what happens is that the aluminum warps when it gets HOT, more so than your iron block,creating a gap that your water flows through into your cylinder/s. If you get a straight edge and hold it across the surface of your head, you will see light shining through where the surface is warped,[a little bit is a LOT] You can take your head to a machine shop and have it resurfaced [as long as it aint too bad] or else you will need a new head. Sounds to me like your gonna need a new[pickpull ect] head.
Q:Cleaning Aluminum TIG Welding?
Preweld cleaning requires two operations: oil/grease removal and oxide removal. As below, remove oils and greases first, then remove the oxide. Don’t reverse this order. Take the following steps before welding aluminum: 1. Remove oil, grease, and water vapor using an organic solvent such as acetone or a mild alkaline solution like a strong soap. You may also use citrus-based degreasers, but be sure to rinse and dry the part before welding. 2. Remove surface oxides with a stainless steel wire brush (used only for aluminum) or strong alkaline or acid. Many welding suppliers sell oxide-removal solutions in spray or squeeze bottles for local application. Exercise extreme care when handling these solutions, and again, rinse and dry the part before welding. 3. Assemble the joint. If it won't be welded immediately, cover the joint with brown Kraft paper to prevent dirt and grit in the air from getting into the joint. 4. Keep the aluminum dry and at room temperature. 5. Weld within a few days. Clean the joint again if it isn't welded within that time. Good luck!!!
Q:why can aluminum sheet after oxide film removal react quicker with hydrochloric acid?
the reason is very simple, the original aluminum sheet has a layer of dense oxide film AI2O3, which has prevented the inner aluminum sheet from reacting with hydrochloric acid. but after oxide film removal, aluminum sheet will directly contact hydrochloric acid, generating H2.
