Q:what are solar panels?
Solar okorder.com/
Q:How to maintain a battery with a solar panel?
What I would suggest is that you find a panel that is rated for 00 mA, at any voltage higher than 8 volts. A 2 or even 8-volt panel will do, because the voltage will drop to match the battery. Then I would get a diode to put in series with the panel to prevent the battery from discharging through the panel at night. That's called a blocking diode. At such low currents, a charge controller is not worth it. There is not enough power to overheat the battery, which is principally what a charge controller protects against in a larger system. Be aware that you could also simply plug a trickle charger for the battery into the wall outlet, at a cost of less than a penny a day in electricity.
Q:Do it yourself Solar Panels?
Firstly, forget about making your own PV panels, while you can (if your chemistry is up to it and the home lab well tooled up) make a small PV cell, the efficiency will suck and you will never make enough to produce a reasonable amount of power. What you can do is to build your own solar thermal system to produce hot water (solar thermal makes better sense then PV in most domestic situations anyway), black painted central heating radiators under perspex, rockwool behind, small pump running a water/glycol mix through a heat exchanger controlled by some trivial electronics... Job done. As long as you don't try to run too hot, you can get a hundred watts or so of heat per square meter from such a solar thermal plant. Regards, Dan.
Q:solar panels and how they work
There is a variety of information available on the internet regarding solar panels. You didn't say if you were interested in installing a photo-voltaic system to generate electricity, or if you wanted a passive solar system. From what I've read, the method that would give you the greatest payback for your investment is the passive solar heater. I can't give you exact instructions on how to construct one of these units, but there are many websites with instructions. My older brother had one of these mounted on his old farmhouse. He said his furnace didn't run all day during the cold Wisconsin winters. The government rebates or tax credits are usually a one time deal. They may pay for part of your installation, but they won't cover the whole cost. The only thing I've heard of that will pay you every year is a wind generator tied into the electric grid, but thats another posting. I'm including a link to a site that will show you how to build a cheap solar heater that you can try yourself.
Q:can solar power panels installed at home provide enough electricity to power house hold appliances?
They can but it takes a lot of panels. A home averages about kw power. Peak power is higher (3-6 kw) but you can handle that with load leveling storage batteries. The total maximum solar flux is about kw/square yard (or square meter). Solar panels are around 0% efficient. Because the Sun travels across the sky, the overall power is about /2 this maximum but then ony during the day (/2 the time). Since you need to recharge your batteries for nighttime, etc. and battery charging is about 50% you lose abother factor of two. So, assuming the Sun shines every day, you can power your house on 80 square yards (700 square feet of solar panels). This is still very rare because the investment in solar panels, batteries, converters, etc. far outweighs what you spend for commercial electricity.
Q:Are photovoltaic cells the same as solar panels?
Yes, they are the same thing.
Q:Why are solar panels still so expensive?
Photo okorder.com/... Notice it costs over $200 and it takes up a sizable amount of space. Plus you have to expose it to bright sun light. Over all this is not something the average consumer wants to spend money on or fuss with. If something is expensive, difficult or inconvenient to use then people won't use it. Just the basic economics of such a device limits its sales never mind its functionality and usability. Even if you made a small one buit into the cover to extend the battery you won't get much of an extension and you will increase the cost of your laptop. Consider how people shop, will they buy the more expensive laptop for a questionable amount of battery extension? Mass production can lower costs but in order to mass produce something you need a demand that will consume what you produce. But if no one wants the item because of the aforementioned issues than you can't justify mass producing the item. This is like the classic which came first Chicken or Egg problem, one doesn't happen without the other. Cost reduction doesn't happen without consumer demand. This is where tax incentives, subsidies, low cost loans and energy buyback contracts come into play in order to spur on demand and jump start mass production. You could also make electricity extremely expensive by taxing oil and carbon so that a Solar Cell becomes economically competitive to very expensive electricity. Problem with this option is the negative impact high energy costs have on economic activity. Just look at what happened a couple of summers ago when gas hit $4/gal. To spur on demand we need to incentives the use of Solar cells (and other alternative energy). This can be done through several means such as subsidies, tax incentives, low interest loans, energy buyback contracts etc...
Q:2V Solar panel directly to 2V inverter...and restult.?
An 300W inverter will draw 25 amps from a car battery but the solar panel will only produce about 4 amps. By drawing too much power with the inverter you lowered the voltage so much in the panels wiring that the amp rating on the internal wiring was exceeded and they melted. Next, time run the panel to a voltage regulator, then the regulator to a car battery, then the battery to the inverter.
Q:Can I use a 250 watt solar panel to power a medium sized upright fridge?
Well you might reduce your bills, but you wont get your capital back for many years. Do you have LED lighting, I have, every-time one of my compact flourescent bulbs blew I would replace it with an LED, after two years most of my lighting is LED, a good investment I think. What devices do you have, heating and cooking is better with gas (much cheaper) Think about better insulation for wintertime.
Q:solar panel question?
Depending on the type of solar panel, any where from 6% to 42.8%.
