Q:why don't we take a cue from mother nature and make our soar panels like trees? thousands of leaves or needle (like a pine tree) instead of one big flat panel? I mean it seems to work pretty good for all the plants i see why would it not work for us. It would be aesthetically pleasing and with the right engineering wouldn't it make them not have to worry about tracking the sun? i already have some ideas about the process of making them just no available labratory.
Because we and the trees are trying to solve a different problem. We want electricity, a tree wants light (and some heat) for photosynthesis. In getting the electricity we use Silicon for solar panels. (Sometimes Gallium Arsenide). And we exploit the same thing in Silicon that allows them to be computer chips. The fact that they conduct differently when voltage is applied. But for a solar panel that is done essentially in reverse. We GET a voltage difference (electricity) from shoving energy through it. Look up junction bias on google or yahoo for explanation. But the DESIGN problem is: You have to couple these panels together the right way - according to their bias. You can't string them up willy nilly. There is a pattern. And when one breaks in this pattern. (I mean when the actual panel cracks, which they do easily as they are brittle). It can change the overall bias. This can make even be worse than if it was removed, it can actually fight against the working ones. The efficiency is there in arranging them like a tree, but the practicality of maintenance would be daunting.

I found some 0 square ft. solar panels that produce 30 watts . 3 watts per s.f. . A 2,000 s.f. home would consume around 2,000 kilowatt hours of electricity in summer months in areas that require air conditioning . This would require 67 kwh daily . You would need ,000 s.f. of panels and dozens of batteries to store the energy for night time .
Q:Here's a little idea I though might help everyone out in Iraq a little: How about if the US mass produces solar panels that are small enough to carry (maybe one foot by three feet) that have a regular power outlet on them to the Iraqis? We could send convoys to the people waiting in line to buy gas and give each person one free solar panel. Why?. A lot of people are buying gas to run generators for air conditioning, not to fuel vehicles. 2. It would help reduce the gas lines if people only needed gas for cars instead of their generators too.3. I have a better idea . Why don't we pull our troops out of there and take the money that we spend to kill people and build a mass amount of solar cells and hand them out to our own people maybe give one of our hungry people a little food to go with it . You could even take a little of that money and put some kids through college . I can think of thousands of things to do with that cash . Why don't we ever take care of our own people first ?

Yes, but it is still very expensive at the moment. Look into solar leasing where you rent your roof to a company that installs and owns the panels and pays you a portion for surplus energy beyond your usage. I looked into going off the grid a couple years ago and based on our usual consumption it was going to take a $40,000 investment with a 0 year payback for panels, inverter, and storage batteries.

Making your own photovoltaic (solar electric) panel is a nontrivial matter if you want to get 60 watts out of it. If this is a science fair project, there are some possible paths that I'd suggest: ) Make your own cupric oxide panel. With just one square foot, you can harvest perhaps 0.5 mW in bright sun - enough to power a solar calculator; -or- 2) Buy a panel to light your 60 watt bulb. You could probably get away with a panel that is 6 square feet, but would use a car headlight as the lamp. If you wanted to light a regular household bulb, you would need electronics to step up the voltage, and you would lose a sizeable fraction of the energy just in the conversion. -or- 3) Buy broken solar cell pieces, or individual solar cells, and solder them together into your own panel. This is a LOT of trouble, and is a finicky process to get working and keep working. And it may not end up being cheaper than buying a ready-made panel. But you can claim that you made it! By the way, crystalline silicon panels are in the ballpark of 5% efficient, and a 3' x 3' one would produce in the neighborhood of 20 watts.
