Q:How would you build a Solar Panel that can convert Sunlight to Energy, just being on your house roof?
The panels themselves- no. Minimal. For most it is just hosing them off with water as needed to remove dust. Battereis on the other hand are usually needing attention every week to maintain the electrolyte levels. The exception being AGM types. Periodic desulphating may be needed on older setups, but beyond that keeping chickens are more demanding. Batteries are how you store your energy for periods when demand exceeds what the panels can deliver, and at night. How many varies. Factors of how you use energy has most impact. Some people can get by with a few hundred Watts, for others 3 to 5 Kilowatts are needed. For the average American, 5 to 7 Kilowatts as a minimum without some serious changes to how energy is used.
Q:can i make a solar panel out of aluminum foil?
Presumably you plan to create a focused parabolic reflector and have it oriented to heat the bottom of a pan. It will obviously need to be larger than the pan in order to gather sunlight outside of the pan's shadow, as well as gather and concentrate enough light onto the bottom of the pan to heat its contents. If you use black paint on the bottom of the pan, make sure it's high temperature paint (available at auto supply stores, often used to paint engine blocks and exhaust manifolds). Yes, a cover on the pan will make it hotter.
Q:are solar panels sufficient for electric heating?
Are you thinking of installing electric solar panels or thermal solar panels or both? It would be better to install electric solar panels for electric heating. You can run 7 heaters as long as you do the calculations for the number of panels need for the daylight hours, and the required battery bank to supply the required power.
Q:Will my 8watt solar panel charge a car battery and how fast?
How about wind power? Check out this site, you can build one for under two hundred and get free batteries.
Q:What is the cost of Solar Panels?
That okorder.com
Q:how to power a 400 watt heater with solar panels and batteries?
You could do that, but it would be an expensive way to go. If what you really want is heat, consider heating water directly with conventional solar water heaters, and storing it in a large, insulated tank. You can then circulate the water through a conventional radiator at night.
Q:so what do you all think about solar panels? are they worth it?
They are absolutely worth it. I had a town house in Boston with solar panel shingles and they were able to supply enough energy for me to feed back the grid-- literally making money off of them. I am building a very large home in the suburbs now and we are doing solar shingles on that. Our contractor estimated that with our geotherm heat pump and energy efficient lighting we should still be able to throw back more energy to the grid all year round! As for leasing it is not worth it. For one thing, most leasing contracts prevent you from selling your energy to the grid yourself but rather they take a cut. But a bigger issue: the government gives you a tax credit on solar panel installations but only if you purchase them! I did the math myself the first time I did solar panels and with the tax credit I saved 25% over leasing. Something else to consider is that with your own panels you can connect a variety of other systems to your home and modify them as needed.
Q:What kind of batteries to use for a solar panel?
If you will be storing them outdoors, you can use auto batteries. Indoors, use sealed marine batteries. Number and size depends on your needs. You will need a charge controller between the solar panels and the batteries to get the maximum power out of the array and to avoid damage to the batteries. And you will need an inverter to convert the 2 or 24 volts to 20 or 240 VAC. One large lead acid battery will supply about 000 watt-hours of energy, enough for 200 watts for 5 hours. You have to look at your loads and decide on how many batteries you need. Frequently it is cheaper to buy new appliances that use less power, as that power difference can save a lot of money in batteries, inverter, charge controller and solar panels. But it sounds like a few thousand watt-hours will be enough, or 2 large batteries. The real limiting factor is how much money you want to spend for the solar panels themselves. .
Q:Homemade Solar Panels?
iv never herd of it but if you take a enpty pringles can and cut a rectangle and take a bamboo skewer shove it in the botom and put a hot dog on it you have a solar oven it takes a half an hour to cook the hotdog
Q:Solar Panels Have Faded?
Unfortunately Eileen the panels are bound to fade as its par for the course. Over time much like everything else (from an AC condenser to your knees and hips) everything starts to go south. When did you purchase and install your panels? If this was done within the past few years then something is definitely wrong, and you should have the manufacturer and installer come back and replace the panels....on their dime of course. Is the warranty on your panels still in effect? If so then its definitely something that they have to come back and take care of. There is a company I know of called Sun Electronics that has a 20 year warranty on their products, so if its worth anything you might want to buy your new panels/system from them. The panels around today are more efficient than those of years past, and with the cost coming down due to economies of scale and the tax incentives you might want to consider getting a new system. Sorry to let you down though Eileen!
