- Q:Hi, I am starting to get curious about the pros/cons of installing solar panels - has anyone done it and is it worth it?
- In the state of Pennsylvania in the USA, a very basic 5KW solar installation will cost you $35,000. Of that you will recover approximately $28,000 over the next five (5) years between the State and the Feds. Making your net-cost something between $7,000 and $9,000 depending on various factors. All other things being equal in a standard household with fuel-based heat and window units vs. central AC, this system will provide roughly 50% of power required with a payback of approximately eight (8) years (with electricity at $0.4/kwh). The system has an estimated forty (40) year service life. Without _all_ the subsidies, the payback is longer than the estimated system life, especially if you consider the time-value of money. The life-cycle cost of a photo-voltaic array is horrendous. By that, I mean the total cost of producing the panels, installing them, and then removing them and disposing of them in an environmentally correct manner. All that added in and there is a negative payback. So, it all depends on what one defines as worth it. Putting the cost onto taxpayers via governmental subsidy to make an otherwise wretchedly expensive process viable may give you all sorts of warm-and-fuzzy feelings about renewable resources and reducing dependence on foreign oil and so forth. But the reality is that the true cost of solar panels exceeds that of nuclear power per KW delivered. Even today when nuclear plants start in the Billions-with-a-B in any currency you would care to name.

- Why of course. Just buying them is the big buzz. Companies are doing thousands if not millions of dollars a month only by selling Solar Panel. - It used to be possible to get broken solar cells for free from solar cell and solar panel manufacturers and then it's just a matter of labouriously measuring the voltage and current characteristics of each fragment and soldering them in a combination of parallel and in series to get a crude solar panel with the desired output but the manufacturers have caught on and now sell the broken fragments by the pound so it's not really a cheap solar panel anymore but it's still very labor intensive and results in a fragile solar panel that is readily damaged and quickly degrades. Not really worth the trouble any more.

- I just got a quote for my place. It came out $8/Watt installed. The quote was for 24 - 20W panels. Dividing the total quoted price by the 24 panels comes out to $,750 per panel. This includes the complete system with the converter and cutoff switch to connect it to the grid. This is also a top-of-the-line system. There are cheaper systems with shorter life spans. My quote was for a system with a 30 year life expectancy. There is a Federal tax credit in 2009 of 30% that will bring the system cost down. There are also nice state tax incentives in CA.

- these solar panels are named different based on the solar cells used... mono-crystalline solar cells: As the name suggests, each cell is made from a slice of a silicon crystal, which is made by purifying, melting and freezing silicon. pol-crystalline solar cells: these are a slight variation of single crystal solar cells. they are made of slices cut out of blocks of several silicon crystals, as opposed to single silicon crystals. check the link below to see other differences between the two types (easy to understand), such as their prices and efficiency levels. there is also a third type of solar cell/panel called amorphous solar cells.

- This is pretty much an exercise in knowing units and dimensional analysis. Watts are in Joules/second. So every second a square with the area(meters^2) of meter^2 receives 380 joules from the sun. In your case the square is the solar panel. So find the area of the solar panel in m^2. If you multiply area times intensity you can see that the meters cancel out and you are left with Watts(J/s). Since you want the Joules received in an hour you again multiply by how many seconds are in an hour. Leaving you with joules. What you have now is the total energy, but your solar panel is only 26% efficient, so just multiply by .26 and you will have your energy.
