- Q:I want to build a room in my basement.I am just doing the research.how does the bottom 2x4 connect to the cement floor ?also, for the wall, how far apart are the studs ?
- Using a treated sill plate( bottom board) you can use a cement nail and hand drive it in or a ram set which is a 22 cartridge the drives a special nail into the concrete. You can buy these at most home improvement stores or even rent them at a rental store. For best results use 16 on center for your walls. 24 oc its possible to get bowing or visible wave in dry wall. Not always but I ve seen it. Any questions you can e mail me through my avatar. GL
- Q:Ok so I want to pour cement in this, im assuming, 12 by 8 ft sized area. How mane bags of cement would I need? How many boards do I need? Do I even need them? Do I also need that wire for the bottom? How much does that run?Can anyone give an estimate of the total cost?
- It sounds like you're building a patio or something? You need to build a form first. For something this size you'll want to rent a small concrete mixer. This link goes into the details...
- Q:And how would you do that?
- Either a hobby shop or if you are near a major retailer (WalMart, Target, KMart, etc.); go into the toys section, find the models and you'll see tubes called model cement. It's a special glue.
- Q:i'm replacing my tub area wall with cement backerboard. how do i butt the backerboard end with the textured drywall end? and how can i remove the old drywall joints (the area with the joint tape)? that's where i will butt the concrete backerboard.
- use the same nylon joint tape and the thinset that you used on the other joints of the backerboard. aplly the thinset as smooth as possible. when it dry you can apply a layer of drywall joint compound over the thinset. you dont have to over lap the tile over the joint. after the drywall compound dries, sand and finish like the rest of the drywall
- Q:My contractor charged me $450 for cement for laying out 600 sq ft tile on the floor. He told me he used 27 bags. This is in addition to grout. Cost seems very high. How many bags is typically needed? Thanks a lot

- Q:Price of laying cement?
- Cement is pretty expensive when you add all the materials and labor. Depending on what you are looking at doing. Sidewalk can run you $250-$2000 depending on linear feet. A Driveway will probably be $5000+ depending on size. That gives you an idea...
- Q:The chimney is deteriorating due to water getting in the cement block.
- Do as the previous answer suggests by adding another flue tile. In order to be up to code you must use refractory cement to join the tiles. Also chip out a little)about half an inch from the flue and fill with a high heat pure silicone. As the flue tile heats up it will expand and then contract when it cools down. The silicone will keep the top from cracking and allowing moisture in. We have been chimney sweeps for 36 years and see crowns always spider cracking from the corner due to expansion. This prevents this from happening and allowing water in. Water will destroy a chimney over time It gets in through the cracks and makes its way to the smoke shelf picking up creosote and fly ash. The mixture turns to a lye like acid and eats the mortar holding the bricks together and soon causes the chimney to fail.
- Q:Thinking about playing a trick on my kids with little footprints on the cement porch. Would food coloring wash out, or should I use something else?
- You would likely have to use something that is water soluble because cement is porous and will absorb liquids on its surface. If it were me, I wouldn't use food coloring, I'd use water color paint. You could probably find it at a hobby store. If the cement area where you are planning this caper is exposed to the weather, the footprints should disappear after a short time. If they need to disappear more quickly, some diluted bleach would speed the process along. You can also speed the process of making the tracks by making a stamp from a potato. Just carve enough away from the potato to leave a mound that sticks out/up in the shape you want the tracks. You can then just dip the potato into whatever colored mixture you decide on, and quickly stamp your tracks on the cement. That would be quicker than drawing the tracks if you're planning on quite a few tracks. Good luck with the prank!
- Q:My fiance and I recently purchased our first home. It's a fixer upper. We are starting with the front yard which due to previous owners negligence is a disgrace. The patio had two giant cracks in the cement which I patched up. The next day the cement was cracked again right where I patched it up. What happened and how do I fix it?
- they didnt get a good base under it would be my guess. so when the ground moves the slab moves. best bet...tear it out and have it done right. 4 in. base of crushed stone and a 4 in. slab. tell them you want a 3500 lb. mix, with air added and fiber added. make sure it is jointed correctly. you dont need a footer under a patio unless it is raised up, and then we call that a porch...
- Q:I have an adjustable basketball hoop with a base that you fill with sand. I would like to cement this in the ground instead. Does anyone know if you can buy post extensions for installing it in the ground?
