- Q:what is the difference in applications between single and multicore power cables?
- Multi-core power cables are useful any time you're carrying a circuit in and out of an appliance at the same location. Usually that's just 2 plus an optional ground. For electronic devices with specialized power requirements, there may be several power lines in the cable carrying different voltages. Single-core power cables are especially useful in high amperage appliances, such as welding equipment, and in DC automotive wiring in which the chassis serves as the ground. Thick cables for high amperage are hard enough to manage and wire without being bundled into a multi-core monster. It also makes sense to use single core cables with a ground chassis so that you only have to run one wire, and just complete the circuit to ground at the point of use. Single-core power cables can also be useful in serial or parallel wired appliances, or power supplies, such as a string of lights, or an array of batteries.
- Q:We have AT U-verse and we lost power during a storm. The picture returned and sound through the tv speakers but our surround sound did not. We have an Onkyo receiver along with the U-Verse cable box but nothing was changed.Any ideas?

- The first consideration is how much power can your speakers handle without self destructing? My opinion is that few can productively handle more than a couple of hundred, and that would be for very brief peaks. The average listening level in a domestic situation is on the order of a few watts - 10 or less. If you really have speakers that can handle that amount of power, and you want to deliver it efficiently, then you need to keep the 2-way resistance of the wires from the amps to the speakers at less than 10% of the speaker impedance. So for 4 ohm speakers (worst case) you want the line resistance to be below 0.4 ohms. For a 50 ft (100 ft 2-way) cable run, that suggests 16 AWG minimum wire gauge for each speaker. Your existing RCA cables should be OK assuming they only carry low level signals. If your present power service and grounding are on a 15 or 20 Amp branch circuit (US) , and no other heavy appliance loads (refrigerator, washer, airconditioner) are on that branch, then it is OK for the new amps.
- Q:A network cable must cross a power cable. What can be done to minimize the amount of EMI?
- Metal shielding would be best. This could be as simple as wrapping each cable with aluminum foil near the cross-over point. Hope this helps.
- Q:This is a clock/phone I was using as a kid. Found it in my basement, and I would like to use it now. I no longer have the original power cable, that's the one needed for the left side. They both look similar, but are not the same. The right side is for the telephone cable. I have no idea what the left's called or where to buy it? - It would work But it is a good idea to have separate cables using each one for a specific job. Buy a cable for each job. Label it near the plug for the amp. That way you are always using exactly the same set up every time. When things go wrong and they will, you wil know which cable and which amp or guitar is having the problem. I have been on stage when it took 10 minutes to find that the wrong instrument had accidentally been plugged into the wrong amp or pedal.
- Q:lets say for an optical drive, the power cable has four pins. im guessing that there is power (12v?) and ground but what about the other two?im trying to plug a pair or old neon sticks into my car for accent lighting and i need to know where to put these wires at, if they are all neccessary.

- Look for where the factory wire harness goes through. there's usually enough room to cut or drill a whole and pass your power wire through. If not, you'll have to make your own hole in a safe place.
