Q:I've heard that solar panels have back-up batteries for when it is cloudy or rainy that day.. is this true?
depending whether the solar array is back to grid or stand alone. Back to grid refers to the array being connect through the inverter to the main electricity supply grid. So when you are producing electricity from the solar array it feeds back into the main grid. Now if you are using more electricity than your array is producing then none will feed into the grid. The stand alone systems require batteries, which are charged from the electricity produced by the solar array. Solar arrays produce electricity on cloudy and rainy days but at a greatly reduced rate ; therefore little to no usable electricity is produced. Stand alone systems require batteries to store the electricity for use at night time and other times when the array is not producing . The back to grid systems require little to no maintenance as the electricity produced is fed back into the electricity network and stored there. Your meter is replaced with a dual meter . It reads your usage and your production. If in Australia you will get paid for the electricity you feed back into the grid. hope this helps.

Volts x amps = watts, so depending on what you want to run or charge will have to be taken into consideration. For example if you have a 0 volt TV @ 2 amps, then you're going to need 220 watts to power that. Best way to find out what it's volts and amps are, is to look on the back of the TV. But for batteries it doesn't matter, cause all batteries are is stored power, that can be later used, just use an inverter on them to convert DC to AC, also use a charger controller between the solar panels and the battery, cause you don't want the Solar panels to overcharge your battery and totally **** it up ______________________________________ But the more watts, the faster the power is returned; less watts, longer times. .

Actually they do make these... u have one but the voltage is no guaranteed as depends on the radiation from sunlight. I have a 8v 60Watt folding solar panel... works great and does charge laptop but not consistent. It works better when you also have an external battery with you as well. Battery will charge laptop Solar panel will charge battery Also most important... put laptop screen on super dim / power savior mode or else laptop will eat up energy. I okorder and they have deep cycle batteries exclusively made for solar panels. but in theory you should get more than one because it only takes around 4-5 volts to charge the battery and you do not want to have it that high even with a charge controller which i would also recommend getting which is like $50 on OKorder but a charge controller is used so you do not overcharge the batteries and fry them or undercharge the batteries and weaken its life it gets it just perfect. it lets the current go in and when it is charged fully nothing goes in an nothing comes out.... for a inverter the one i was going to get was $70 500 watt inverter but changes it from dc to ac...hope i helped
Q:what is the average cost, for a single family home, to install solar panels? I live in CA.
I just got a quote for my place. It came out $8/Watt installed. The quote was for 24 - 20W panels. Dividing the total quoted price by the 24 panels comes out to $,750 per panel. This includes the complete system with the converter and cutoff switch to connect it to the grid. This is also a top-of-the-line system. There are cheaper systems with shorter life spans. My quote was for a system with a 30 year life expectancy. There is a Federal tax credit in 2009 of 30% that will bring the system cost down. There are also nice state tax incentives in CA.

Q:I am looking at a need of roughly 30w/hour need per 24 hour period. I have spent several hours now looking for information online and have found plenty of info regarding the panels themselves, but information regarding the batteries backups have been slim. I understand that there is a 5-7 hour peak time to collect the energy. I am looking for information regarding the batteries themselves. How do the batteries work, what size batteries should I look for, and what is the life expectency for the batteries? Any website links would also be appreciated!
Solar panels have their own characteristics and generate current depending on the intensity of sunlight falling on them and not on the temperature. Direction of the panel also makes lots of difference. Nowadays very thin panels are available at very high cost. The more area a panel occupies it generates more current. The current generated by a panel cannot be readily used since the current and voltage varies with the load connected to it. So normally a regulator is used to have constant voltage and constant current to come from the panel. This charges the battery. You have to calculate the total/normal current from the charger and then find the AH of the battery. When you have calculated the AH of the panel/charger then you can divide the AH of the battery by the AH of the charger/panel and find out the time taken to fully charge the battery. You also have to remember that there is a de-rating factor to be taken into consideration in the battery.
