Q:A good brand of solar panels for my house?
You don't say what you are doing. Are you trying to get electricity from them and need solar photovoltaic panels or are you trying to run a heating or hot water system and need solar thermal panels. It is unfortunate that both of these are known as solar panels as they are really two entirely different designs. Currently the solar thermal panels are more efficient and therefore have a quicker pay back period usually measured in lower single digit years while the photovoltaic panels have paybacks that are sometimes more than double that unless you figure in increased property values and state and federal subsidiaries and tax credits where available. Edit: Recent advances make any current investment in photovoltaic panels likely to be obsolete in 5 years. Still someone has to be on the cutting edge. Two currently available technologies are concentrating the sun's rays within the collector on a much small chip area.2 This improves the efficiency and lowers the cost as concentrators are cheaper than chips. The other option is newer chips that accept a wider spectrum of solar energy.3 This has the potential advantage of producing more energy on cloudy days. This may not be so important in your situation. Balanced against cutting edge technology will be the possibility of getting older panels at a less expensive cost. The bottem line will always be pay back period. More panels at a lower efficiency and cheaper price will be just as good as high efficiency at a higher price if the numbers work out. 4 Between two answers here you now have a criteria for selection and some recomendations. Good luck with your project.
Q:Solar panel placement idea?
outside is going to be much better. You can't tell but glass is actully opaque to many ranges of 'light'. If you look at advertising for windows you may see claims to reduce sun fading of your carpet/ furniture. That is because the glass blocks UV. Solar panels get some of their energy from UV light. Also some windows are engineered to block IR to help insulate better when the house is cooler than the outside. Again, solar panels get some of their energy from light in the infrared range. And finally if you're charging batteries the 'off angle time' is still important. The amount of light absorbed is pretty closely related to the cosine of the angle that the sun is 'off' of the direct. so when the sun is 45 degrees off of perpendicular the panels still get cos45 =.707 or about 70% of the available energy. (In practice it's a little less than that because not as much energy gets to the panel to be absorbed as at midday). But anyway, you can figure two hours of morning or late afternoon sun will give you as much energy as hour of midday sun. So if the panel is inside, you miss out on that available energy.
Q:what is the cost of a solar panel
Photovoltaic solar panels are priced by the watt. Average price today is just under $4.00 per watt. More efficient panels take less space to produce the same amount of electricity. To design a system, you first must decide how much power you are looking to produce. then you look at the various products to find what fits your need. if you have a very compact space, you may pay more for more per watt for really efficient panels, but if you have a good amount of space you can get lower cost panels that take more space and cost less. With a wind turbine complimenting your system you will only need a modest battery storage bank. 5kw system could get you off grid entirely! 5,000 watts x $4.00 = $60,000. 3kw system with net metering mat cost about $2,000. Many homeowners (like me) build their systems piecemeal to keep costs manageable. Good Luck! P.S. - If you build it with the house, the price can be rolled into the mortgage. $60,000 would add +/- $300.00 a month to your payment, but you would have no Electric bill, a savings of $00-200 a month. Once it is paid for, you only have to pay maintenance costs.
Q:Is there anyone trying to create a cheaper and more efficient solar panel?
Solar panels are one of the hottest areas in materials research today - from basic science to applied production techniques. There have been major strides in thin-film manufacturing technique as well as silicon technology. There's not a lot of hype about it because solar panel manufacturers don''t really need to advertise yet - they are selling at factory capacity with demand for more. Standard silicon solar panels now sell for around $3 a watt, and grid parity is expected within 5 years. Reference is to the MIT Technology Newsletter, which runs several articles a month on new solar tech.
Q:rooftop pool solar panel leaks?
Depending on the material and operating temperature of the panel, it MAY be possible to fix it very simply and easily by applying Hot Glue Gun adhesive over the cracked area. The high temperature glue gun adhesive melts at approximately 60 degrees Farenheit, and if the collector temperature does not quite reach, or exceed that operating temperature, then that repair method should work. Another possibility is an aerosol spray can product called LeakEnder. This is usually available at your local hardware store, or the major home improvement centers [like Lowe's, Sutherland's, Home Depot, McCoy's, etc.]. After preparing the area to be patched by cleaning, you just spray the LeakEnder patching material on the crack and an eighth of an inch or so around. IF the operating pressure or the collector is very low, it MAY even be possible to patch the leak with nothing more than a narrow strip of DUCT TAPE!!!!! Another possibility, but unless carefully accomplished is to weld the crack with a Soldering Gun and some scrap plastic from packaging material. The problem with this fix is that you must be very experienced in application of heat from the Soldering Gun, OR you will melt a larger hole in the collector tube than the crack was. Regardless of patching method, it is CRITICAL that the cracked area to be patched MUST be CLEAN and DRY BEFORE applying any patching material. Good luck!
Q:How can I adapt an automotive reglator to a solar panel?
solar panels will naturally produce a certain DC voltage which is what your battery needs - the current will vary based on the sun light. You need probably 4V to have some over voltage. So based on your specs look at having at least 4 V but not too much over that (tells you how many panels you need in series) I would have blocking diodes (probably the solar cell has them built in) to insure the battery does not discharge thru the panel.
Q:List of new solar panel manufactures?
you won't be in a position to purchase at that point except you're related to governement. a lot of manufacturing is already spoken for for years yet to come again. the place you reside determines what you may legally purchase and installation. the ecu has this is own certification, the U. S. has 2 gadgets, the Canadians have their own. Your answer additionally demands understanding the use for the photograph voltaic panels, despite if it extremely is grid-tie, off-grid or standalone to skill an equipment. and additionally you may desire to choose for mono crystalline, poly crystalline, or skinny-action picture.
Q:How do Solar Panels Work?
A solar panel is a panel of a certain material that is very sensitive to light. Now, when you place if out in the sunlight, the photons enter that material, and gets converted to energy in the form of electrostatic electrons. These electrons gets carried away by the small silver wires you see running zig-zag over the panel, and is then used as electronic current. It is actually a lot more intricate and detailed than this, but this is more or less how it works. The reason is works better in sunlight, is simply because sunlight has a lot more energy behind it than lightbulbs and other sources, but they work as well!
Q:Why are solar panels still so expensive?
materials and process... if they could be built in a sweatshops, by kids, in Malaysia, they'd be cheap and everyone would use them
Q:Can I plug a solar panel into a wall socket to lower my electric bill?
You're quite right that the solar panel can't be directly connected. I sense that you want to start small, but unfortunately, it's hard enough to make a system with a dozen or more panels pay back. (It can, we have a system...) But with just one panel, maybe a small one, the economy of scale is gone. You need to buy a grid-tie inverter, which watt-for-watt will be more expensive than a regular size one, and for a small panel, the $$/watt value will be poor. There are some [illegal in most places] tiny grid-tie inverters that I see advertised on the web from time to time, with an ordinary plug that goes into the wall. Those are generally against electrical codes, and the danger is real. There is also a crop of micro-inverters being sold by companies such as Enphase. These are legitimate products, but will still be costly per watt, and ultimately, it will be hard to have a net savings over time with just one panel. Have you already taken the conservation steps like LED light bulbs, efficient appliances (especially refrigerator), insulation, and using a power strip to turn off loads that are not being used? That stuff isn't sexy, but saves money fast.
