Q:I have a 20 watt solar panel that I want to set up. I need to connect it to the solar controller but do not know what cable to use. I plan on adding more solar panels down the line. What would be the best cable to use?
How long is the run? 2 gauge is a good choice for runs up to 25 feet at 20 watts, if you are much further in your run, move to 0 gauge to reduce resistance of the wire itself in the circuit. Otherwise refer to the prevailing electrical code of your local unit government. This is a must if you plan to maintain insurance. At lower voltage, a little resistance means a lot. 4 gauge might be okay for 20 VAC, but the voltage drop on a low voltage system from resistance of the wire itself is measurable at 20 feet. It is the difference between a light fixture working or not. If you are planning on adding additional panels in the future, you can get terminal buss with screw hold downs at various vendors like Mouser or Digi key. Each panel can be on it's own screw, while the buss is common on the other side of the connection. one for the positive and one for the negative.

Q:How are solar panels made?

Unfortunately solar panels are low output,generally only 2 volt and very low amperage,so you would need to build a multi panel array with a DC-AC converter all together costing several hundred dollars which would only work during sunlight.Just roughly figuring,about $800. Plan2-Solar charger,battery bank,and DC-AC inverter so it would work 24hrs a day,also several hundred $$. Solar power does just not seem feasible(to me)in this application.By far the cheapest set up here would be an extension cord fromhouse to the bucket.260 watts per hr is a fairly lightweight draw,even not figuring the thermostat's cycling it on and off as needed.Electricity is sold in kilowatt hours(000W/hr).This bucket would use(not allowing for thermostats control lowering it)appx 6000watts or 6KW per day.Depending on your electrical cost per Kwh it would cost very little to run.(In my location appx 50cents a day) or appx the same amount as my computer(325watts total)) Note that that would be a maximum rate,and would actually be less due to thermostat cycling off and on as needed.
Q:I purchased some small 3.6 v 70mA solar panels online. I have no experience with solar panels. I am confident of the layout of the parallel circuit I want to create, however I don't know how to properly connect the tabs that come from the sides of the panels. Any help on connecting them?
Each solar panel will be wired to each other in parallel if you have more then one. When you wire in parallel the amps(current) from each panel will add to the total sum of current, but the total voltage stays the same. The voltage must match the rest of your system. For example, if your are using 2 volt solar panels you must be using 2 volt batteries and voltage regulator. Voltage regulator must be rated above maximum voltage and current(amps). Connect the output from the solar panels to a properly rated regulator, solar panel voltage regulators are rated by maximum voltage and amps, that will shut off the current flow to the batteries once the batteries are sufficiently charged there by preventing damage to the batteries. The way that you figure the rating needed for the regulator is by adding the maximum amps for each solar panel, this should be listed on the solar panel, and if they are 2 volt panels and they are connected in parallel then max voltage should be around 22 volts. It's the amperes that is most importance when choosing a regulator
