Wow that is a great idea! We have so many old houses around here that no one lives in and they are building houses on 2 /2 acre lots. That seems like a waste of land. There is this construction company that is building town houses with solar panel roofs and the upstairs is the bedrooms and the down stairs is the living area so that it takes a very small lot. 40 x 60 even has room for a car port and small backyard. My friend has one and he made it low cost so everyone has a chance at home ownership. They are being build where he is buying the land and tearing down old houses and puting up these town houses. Makes the town look better and cleans up otherwise bad looking neighborhoods. If they can do that here why not all over? By building up she was telling us it cost less for foundation and roofing which is the most expensive. It is 900' sq ft. 2 bdrm bath. Let's go back to the time when people didn't have to have these 6000 sq.ft houses with 5 acre lots.

Q:Benefits of Solar Panels?
There's a few different kinds of solar panels. Some of them are only for collecting heat, they're relatively inexpensive and not a bad deal, though installation can be expensive of course. The most sophisticated of these use some pretty high tech collectors to heat up an antifreeze solution that in turn is circulated through a reservoir (how water heater), to supply the house. Your electric producing solar panels are more expensive. You can go on OKorder and do a search on photovoltaic panels and get a pretty good idea real quick. The panels alone can run you 2 or 3 bucks a watt of output or more, and you may need 3 or 4 thousand watts of output to give you reasonable system for your house, depending on how much electricity you use. Of course you'd need to understand the basic wiring involved for that, and you'd almost certainly be required to retain an electrician to tie any system into the grid itself. Although there is such a thing as a plug in grid tie inverter. This is is a gadget that will take your DC solar panel output and feed it into the standard wiring of your house via an ordinary electrical outlet. You'd still need to understand enough to get the DC voltage right no doubt.
Q:Will a 3w Solar Panel Charge A 55ah Car Battery?
To charge a 2V lead acid battery, you pretty much have to put almost 24V across it and it's only 50% efficient at charging so if your solar panel does put out 3W, you can expect 3/24/2 or /6th of an amp in usable charging. Therefore, from a flat battery, it would take 55*6 or 880 hours to charge the battery. If you assume about 6 hours of usable sunlight per day, that would be 47 days not taking into consideration the normal leakage that lead acid batteries have. It's quite likely that the leakage rate will be greater than the charging rate and the battery will never charge. You'll need a bigger solar panel.

Q:Solar Panel System at Harbor Freight?
i wouldn't. - harbor freight isn't known for the best quality stuff. - 75 watts assumes roof mounting, at 90 degrees to the sun, on a bright day. you're going to get considerably less. and only when the sun is highest in the sky. maybe you should look at, your computer, for example. if you're using it for 4 hours, and it has a 500 watt power supply, and you add 200-500 watts for the monitor, and some for the printer, modem, etc, you'd use 5kw that day. your 75 watt panel, generating maybe 50 watts at most, for maybe 4 hours when the sun was highest, and shining directly on the panel, would generate 200 watt hours. it would take 25 days to generate the electricity you'd use in single day. in the winter, you'd be pretty much out of luck. there just isn't enough bright sun. clearly, it's up to you, but there's a harbor freight near me, and i'll not be rushing out to get such a system. further, most appliances are quite voltage sensitive. you really do need to have the voltage in the 0-20 range. too much out, either higher or lower, will shorten the life of appliances at best.

There are plenty of electrical contractors and speciality solar contractors out there to help you to make sure that the system is properly designed with the correct components, properly installed, and legally certified. Also many states require a permit that may have a large fee before any installation and may not allow the homeowner, especially for city homes, so it is best to check first. You might be able to get away with it if you live in the country, but consider the safety as well. See if you can work with your contractor to get the materials that you both agree upon as well. They can help guide you based upon their experience. Also shop around for pricing as the panels are now going below $ per watt !
