- If you have a carpet cleaner (or can borrow or rent one) I would do it. There are special carpet cleaners that are heavy duty and for mold/mildew/pets and will get rid of most smells. We had some flooding in a carpeted room, and it took a couple of cleanings, but you can't smell anything funky any longer. We used regular cleaner the first time and the heavy duty stuff the second time. As a temporary solution, you could out some baking soda on the carpet, leave a day or so and vacuum it up. But, if the smell is in the carpet pad, it won't do much.

- Your answer from CowboyDoc was something very important to consider. The age of the carpet. Having been the owner of a flooring store for many years, I totally agree with what Doc told you. If the carpet is old, you can most certainly rip it. Your answer from John G was accurate as to how to do it. I sure would have liked to have him on my staff of installers. He sounds very knowledgeable. I hope you have good luck with your stretching job. And DO consider the age of the carpet. Once it rips you are going to be forced to buy new carpet. - If it says to use it in a carpet cleaner, then that's what you should do. It's unlikely to mess it up if you follow the instructions.

- You will need to provide more warmth, yes. Clipping strips them of their body hair and this is their only natural way to keep warm. So you'll need to provide better covers than you currently are, i suggest moving to the 250g fill and possibly even adding an under rug to that.

- As a professional carpet cleaner this comes up a lot. Our policy is we will try a spot/stain or two (usually the worst) to give you an idea of what the carpet will turn out like. If you don't think it will turn out the way you like that's it we leave. No reputable carpet cleaner will guarantee a spot or stain will come out until they try, because they can't tell for sure until they try. A carpet cleaner can tell if some stains are likely to come out but cannot guarantee it. As an incentive to get your lanlord to pay for the carpet cleaning you can point out carpet cleaning is tax deductable for a landlord.(which is why mony landlords ask you for the reciept, for their files of course, if you get the carpets clean) but thats another story

- It depends on the type of carpet, some use mild adhesieves and others have to be stretched...if it is the kind that has to be stretched you will need a tack strip around the pirimeter of the room and padding cut to fit on the inside of the tack strip, then you will need to rent a carpet stretcher which has teeth on it and get down on your knees and knee kick the stretcher to stretch the carpet towards the tack strip all the way around the room, very hard on the knees....when you get the carpet stretched to the tack strip tap the carpet onto the tack strip with a hammer, good luck.
