It wasn't too long ago that the idea of generating electricity from the sun was a scifi dream, when it did become a reality it was mostly seen in small appliances, such as the humble desk top calculator. The sheer cost of solar panels for generating an alternative electricity supply for the home put the idea way beyond the reach of most home owners. What equation includes those variables (change in temperature, flow rate) and would allow me to incorporate the angle of the panel. The insolation level is a function of latitude, cloudiness, elevation and some other factors. 2) Availability of grants, incentives and tax credits. Reducing the initial cash outlay is a great way to speed up profitability. For example, in the US, the 30% federal tax credit greatly reduces the payback period as it puts some of the cash back in your pocket in a short amount of time. Minimizing the initial cost has a big impact, since money in your pocket today is always worth more than money down the road. 3) Net metering or feed-in-tariff. If you are able to sell back your excess power, or all of the solar electricity to the grid, then you can also improve the payback period. Feed-in-tariffs are not very common in North America, but net metering is an option. Investing in energy efficiency measures (e.g., LED lights) at the same time as solar may help generate more excess power and help with the bottom line. I have them. Jamie's way of going about it is one way, the other way is to do-it-yourself. I went the DYI way and got off the grid. I bought my panels online along with the batts, they were cheap. I paid cash on the spot, this allowed me to not get into paperwork and possibly financing it. Now I save what I was paying every month. I am not interested in the meter going backwards and selling my power, I am free now!

It won't run major appliances. A hair dryer is typically 500 watts and could not be run by this system.
