- Q:I want to install ceramic tile in my kitchen. My subfloor consists of 2x8 on 16 centers with 1/2 5 ply plywood. Will it be OK to lay 1/2 cement board directly on this or do I need to some how increase the strength of the subfloor? Any recommendations.
- you could do that and MAYBE not have a problem. but if it was me, the 1/2 would come out and 3/4 would replace it. i have done a few jobs for people that dont want to replace the 1/2 and didn't have any problems with the tile or grout lines cracking. its just up to you really. if there is ANY give at all on you floor right now, id replace the 1/2.
- Q:I'm getting my bathroom shower tile installed and was told to get 4 sheets 1/2 thick backerboard with screws and I need to know if there is a difference between Cement Board and Backer Board?
- Cement board and backer board are the same things and for use in the shower I recommend and use 1/2 cement board. Cement board comes in 3'x5' sheets so make sure you have enough as blue board,another type of backer board comes 4'x8'. Good luck with your project.

- I have used a modified thinset to ..... set the cement boards and it didn't stop a crack from forming at a beam. SO I guess what I'm saying is. move on using a GOOD modified thin set mortar. you will be fine. But stuff happens. you are skipping the safety...... but I would live dangerously.
